The Art of Discovery

Honest Seating, Built from the Ground Up.

At Manhattan Chairs, we believe that the old way isn’t outdated—it is the only way to build something meant to last a lifetime. We don’t rely on mass-produced, imported frames or rushed synthetic shortcuts. Our process begins long before a single piece of wood reaches our facility. We source the finest, slowly grown European Beechwood from responsibly managed, sustainable forests. Because a chair is only as resilient as the grain it is carved from, we treat wood not just as a raw material, but as a living component that dictates the strength, comfort, and longevity of every commercial space it inhabits.
The Journey

01 / Harvest & Sawing

True reliability requires absolute control over the raw timber before it even resembles a piece of furniture. We look beyond basic timber sourcing by managing the initial mechanical raw log processing. Our materials are sawn with intentional alignment to preserve the natural structural integrity of the slow-growth deciduous grain. Every cut is measured to minimize waste, ensuring that 100% of the tree is accounted for, creating a clean canvas of dense hardwood prepared to withstand high-volume hospitality usage.

02 / Component Pressing

While the silhouette of our classic seating relies on solid wood bars, specialized accents, supports, and ergonomic seat foundations demand an entirely different discipline: component molding. Selecting pristine, ultra-thin hardwood veneers, we cross-laminate thin sheets using high-pressure architectural presses. It is during this extreme compression stage that intricate, custom relief details and seat contours are embedded directly into the core layers, forging lightweight panels that defy splitting or warping.

03 / Aging & Drying

Where others use aggressive, rapid kiln-drying to force production speeds, we embrace patience. Our raw lumber is carefully graded, meticulously stacked, and aged naturally for up to a year. This slow seasoning process releases internal wood moisture organically, preventing the hidden warping, splitting, and structural weak spots that plague mass-manufactured seating. We only begin crafting once the wood achieves absolute equilibrium.

04 / Vapor Conditioning

To bend solid wood without breaking its spirit, we utilize high-pressure, thermal steam chambers. Immersing the seasoned beechwood in vapor heated above 100°C alters the natural cellular structure of the timber, making the dense fibers temporarily pliable. It is a costly, time-intensive tradition, but it is the secret behind creating seamless, fluid silhouettes with unbroken structural integrity.

05 / Generational Bending

True bentwood cannot be automated; it requires intuition, physical strength, and an intimate understanding of the wood’s resistance. Our master craftsmen hand-manipulate the heated timber, wrapping it around precision steel contours and locking it in place with traditional wedges. It takes over half a year of daily training for a craftsman to master this dance. The wood is then dried inside its molds, permanently locking in its elegant curves.

06 / Precision Assembly

A commercial chair must withstand the ceaseless rigors of high-traffic hospitality environments. We don’t just rely on superficial surface glue. Our frames are anchored using interlocking mortise-and-tenon joinery, heavily reinforced solid wood corner blocks, and industrial-grade steel fasteners. Every component is square-tested and hand-sanded to pristine smoothness before moving to the finishing lines.

07 / Deep Staining & Curing

Instead of simply painting over the surface, our chairs undergo an immersive deep-staining process where pigments saturate deep into the pores of the beechwood. Followed by multi-layered applications of protective catalyzed varnish cured in temperature-regulated environments, the finish becomes highly resistant to mechanical impacts, moisture, and commercial cleaning agents while showcasing the wood’s authentic, natural grain.

08 / Structural Intricacy & Cane Weaving

To balance rugged durability with weightless comfort, select open-frame bentwood silhouettes receive an intricate, hand-woven treatment using natural rattan reed strands. This meticulous, geometric interlacing requires immense patience and steady precision, taking a master weaver hours of uninterrupted hand manipulation for a single piece. The resulting canvas offers a uniquely breathable, flexible suspension matrix that yields effortlessly to body weight while naturally maintaining tight, pristine tension for years.

09 / Final Lacquering

A gorgeous deep stain requires a matching micro-barrier to survive commercial cleaning solutions, constant guest impacts, and fluctuating ambient moisture. Moving to the clean-room environment, frames receive double-layered structural clear coats applied with uniform precision. This liquid barrier penetrates deep into the grain matrix rather than merely sitting on top, preserving the raw textural contours of the wood while locking out external elements and preventing surface scratching.

10 / Premium Upholstery

The final signature of our seating takes place in the tailoring studio, where custom aesthetics meet commercial-grade tactile comfort. High-performance, heavy-double-rub vinyls and custom luxury textiles are measured, patterned, and tension-stretched over dense, fire-retardant cushioning matrices. Secured using reinforced internal stitching and optional classic nailhead trim profiles, the resulting surface ensures that the seating experience is as structurally supportive as the bentwood frame holding it.
